Cycling

The area is well renowned for cycling, the Tarka Trail is over 180 miles in length taking a looping route through North and Mid Devon, The Trail travels from Braunton, to Barnstaple, Bideford up to Torrington taking the route of a disused railway line along the Taw and Torridge Rivers, This stretch is suitable for cyclists and walkers.

   
   

Braunton to Barnstaple
A flat, off-road route, suitable for families, which runs along the banks of the River Taw . This is a good section for Wintering Wildfowl such as Curlew, Redshank, Dunlin, Golden Plover and Brent Geese, you may even see a rare Spoonbill.  The route is signposted (NCN 27) from the Tourist Information Centre in Braunton. Passing through Chivenor, and crossing the tributary river Yeo on the new swing bridge.

Barnstaple to Bideford
You can join this section at Barnstaple Railway Station and head out westwards on this popular traffic free path towards Bideford.
This route gives you superb views across the mouth of the Taw Estuary and there are some interesting sculptures to peruse along the way before you reach Fremlington Quay before heading on to Bideford (East-the-Water) via Instow.
Route Distance: Barnstaple to Bideford 9miles/14km (10 miles / 16km).
